CHAPTER SEVEN

Emily pulled into the driveway of a small home with a tiny patch of yard next to the driveway. There was a bit of fence around the side with a gate, suggesting that at least there was a larger garden in the back for Diesel to run around. The house itself looked like it needed a new coat of paint, and the windows were a bit grubby, but it was nothing that would affect the happiness of the dog.

“You do me a favor, Diesel.” Emily unbuckled her seatbelt and turned to her passenger, nose-to-nose with the dog. “You go and have a good life. I know you miss Clark, and I’m so sorry for you for that. But I think you’ll still do just fine, and at least you don’t have to wonder where you’re going to live.” She gave him another scratch under the chin before she got out of the car and led him up the walkway to the front door.

Diesel was quickly becoming uncontrollable. He strained at the end of his leash as he hopped up onto his hind legs and slammed his paws into the door. He was ready to get back into his home!

“Hey, buddy! It’s all right! Calm down!” The door swung open to reveal a young man who seemed to be of a similar age to Clark. He was tall and athletic in a pair of shorts and a t-shirt, and he immediately bent down to take Diesel into his open arms. “Yeah, I know! What a scare you had, huh? Thought you were going to be in doggie jail forever, didn’t you?”

Emily was very sure that Diesel would’ve knocked Mason straight to the ground if he’d been a weaker man. Still, she was so very glad to know that the dog had a home even though his owner was gone. “Is there anything else you need?” she asked politely. “Ms. Austin told me your car was in the shop, so if you need me to run and get some kibble, I’m happy to do so.”

Mason, who seemed to have nearly forgotten she was there in his enthusiasm over the dog, looked up at her in surprise. He got back to his feet and opened the door wider. “I’m so sorry. I completely forgot my manners. Come on in for a minute. I didn’t mean to leave you standing out there.”

“That’s all right. I’m just glad that Diesel is so happy. He didn’t like the shelter very much, even though we take excellent care of the animals there. I’m Emily Cherry, by the way.” She stepped inside the front room, observing a rather beaten sofa against one wall. Someone was in the habit of holding their drink right on the arm, since several drippy stains ran down the green fabric. The carpet wasn’t in much better condition, but there was a massive flatscreen television on another wall. Yes, this was certainly the sort of place being rented by two young men.

“Mason Hailey. I hope Diesel didn’t give you too much trouble.
